QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about how Coloartura works, how our pieces are crafted, and how to explore the collection.

What is Coloartura, and how are these artworks created? +

Coloartura is an autonomous digital art gallery and online atelier based in Ermelo, Netherlands. Every artwork is born as a handmade physical painting on heavy cotton paper using real watercolor and wax crayons. We then scan these tactile textures at microscope-level resolution (2400+ DPI) and compose them into perfectly balanced 1:1 square digital master files.

What is the origin and meaning behind the name Coloartura? +

The name Coloartura represents a fusion of color, craft, and art, while offering a playful nod to the expressive layers of the musical term 'coloratura'. In our atelier, it embodies the virtuosic movement of fluid pigment, mineral vibrancy, and architectural discipline.

Why is every single artwork a perfect square (1:1 ratio)? +

A square has equal width and height, meaning there is no horizontal "landscape" or vertical "portrait" bias. It creates a calm, perfectly centered mathematical frame where colors and fluid textures can be experienced with absolute visual balance.

Can I download and use the artworks for research or study? +

Yes! We provide a free Open Art Data dataset in JSON format containing color codes, pigment frequencies, and mathematical coordinates under a Creative Commons (CC BY-SA 4.0) license. It is designed for students, art historians, and developers alike.

Why are there no muddy or dull gray colors in the collection? +

Our artistic manifesto strictly forbids dull filler tones. We exclusively use pure, single-mineral pigments (such as Cobalt Azure PB28, Vermilion Red PR108, and Hansa Yellow PY35) to keep the optical contrast as electric and vibrant as possible against the warm off-white canvas.

Can these digital artworks be printed as real physical art? +

Absolutely. Because all digital masters are rendered in ultra-high optical resolution and calibrated in the OKLCH color space, they can be printed on museum-grade 300gsm cotton rag with 12-color archival giclée inks, lasting over 100 years without fading.
