Stromeyer's Discovery & The Triumph Over Orpiment
Prior to the 19th century, painters seeking luminous yellows relied on organic plant extracts like gamboge (which faded swiftly in daylight) or hazardous minerals like King's Yellow (orpiment / arsenic trisulfide) and lead-tin yellow.
In 1817, German chemist Friedrich Stromeyer, while inspecting pharmaceutical zinc compounds in Göttingen, isolated a new elemental metal: cadmium. Upon reacting cadmium salts with hydrogen sulfide, Stromeyer precipitated a brilliant, pure yellow cadmium sulfide.
By the mid-1840s, commercial production of Cadmium Yellow was established across Europe, providing painters with an archival, non-toxic alternative to arsenic-based yellows and permanently altering the chromatic range of European landscape painting.

Cadmium Yellow (Color Index PY35) is an inorganic semiconductor composed of cadmium zinc sulfide solid solution [Cd₁₋ₓZnₓS]. By varying the proportion of zinc substituted into the cadmium sulfide lattice, manufacturers control the band gap energy (ranging from ~2.35 eV to 2.50 eV), modulating the hue from pale lemon to deep saffron.
The pigment's sharp optical absorption edge absorbs all ultraviolet and short-wave blue photons (below 500 nm), reflecting virtually 100% of green, yellow, and red wavelengths. This step-function reflectance profile yields exceptional saturation and spectral warmth.
Possessing a high refractive index (n ≈ 2.35 to 2.45), Cadmium Yellow offers extraordinary hiding power. It carries an ASTM Class I lightfastness rating, ensuring zero fading under intense museum gallery illumination.

Vincent van Gogh celebrated Cadmium Yellow as the ultimate symbol of life, heat, and divine providence. He employed it profusely in his iconic 'Sunflowers' series, 'The Yellow House', and the radiant celestial disc of 'The Sower'.
Claude Monet used Cadmium Yellow to paint brilliant sunlight breaking through morning mists across his 'Haystacks' and 'Rouen Cathedral' series. Georges Seurat and Paul Signac incorporated it into their pointillist color division systems to generate optical vibrancy.

Atelier Execution: Saffron Washes & Paraffin Barrier Dynamics
In the Coloartura atelier in Ermelo, Cadmium Yellow PY35 is formulated into high-pigment watercolor suspensions applied over heavy 300gsm cold-pressed cotton paper.
The dense mineral wash blankets the textured cotton fibers with opaque saffron brilliance. When bordered by wax crayon resist lines, the pigment gathers along the paraffin edges, creating a luminous, glowing border that anchors Coloartura's 1:1 square masterworks.
