Chemically formulated as a hydrated potassium iron-magnesium aluminosilicate (K[(Mg,Fe²⁺)(Fe³⁺,Al)]Si₄O₁₀(OH)₂), celadonite belongs to the mica group of phyllosilicates. Its characteristic soft, greyish-green chromaticity is generated by intervalence charge-transfer transitions between adjacent Fe²⁺ and Fe³⁺ cations located within octahedral sheet layers.
Spectrophotometric reflectance curves show a gentle, broad reflectance peak centered between 510nm and 540nm, paired with weak absorption across the red and near-infrared spectrum. This optical configuration produces an exceptionally soft, low-chroma green with a refractive index of approximately 1.62, giving it a translucent, veil-like optical body.
Rated ASTM Lightfastness Class I, PG23 is chemically inert and completely impervious to ultraviolet radiation, lime plaster alkalis, and atmospheric pollutants. In aqueous watercolor washes, its dense, platelet-shaped mineral particles granulate delicately, settling into the tooth of cold-pressed cotton paper.
